BZSE’s Dana Kweekel now a Certified Legislative Lawyer
On August 26, 2022, Dana Kweekel, a senior associate at BZSE attorneys at law, was awarded a diploma issued ‘with distinction’ (‘met genoegen’) by the University of Curacao and the Caribbean Center for Legislation demonstrating that she now is a Certified Legislative Lawyer.

The course to become a Certified Legislative Lawyer took a year to complete and contained instruction on constitutional and administrative law, general legislative doctrine, legislative techniques, and a legislative clinic where the course participants jointly reviewed and amended an existing piece of legislation.

Looking back, Dana indicates: “Though it was sometimes challenging to combine work and study, it was definitely worth it. I genuinely enjoyed acquiring new skills and gaining more in-depth knowledge about constitutional and administrative law. I thank the UoC and the Caribbean Center for Legislation for allowing me to finish the course after leaving government employment and BZSE for supporting me. It is no secret that Sint Maarten has a shortage of legislative lawyers and that legislative projects, aimed at creating new legislation, updating existing legislation and/or drafting implementing decrees, are sometimes stalled or get stuck because of this. I look forward to applying my experience as attorney and (previously as) legal policy advisor and the technical expertise obtained through this course to advise (semi) governmental entities and private clients in their efforts to improve our legal system.”

With this achievement and recognition, BZSE is able to provide an even more encompassing array of legal services. BZSE is proud of this accomplishment and congratulates Dana with her diploma.
